I am not sure how I would define leadership, but one quality I think is essential is somebody who can help frame the issue on hand in ways that get everybody involved in the discussion (whether they agree or not). Sometimes that means raising the issue when it has not already been raised, sometimes that means shifting the discussion from a minor issue to the major one people should be focusing on, and often that means keeping people on task. This involves exercising some type of power (even if it just keeping to an agenda at a meeting), and so being a leader also means being open to being told that you're wrong, or that you've overstepped your bounds, and requires responding without defensiveness.
